Lyrics

Single | Pop | 3 mins 12 secs | 9 March 2018

“I Believe You” was released on March 9, 2018, in honor of International Women’s Day and Time’s Up for Women’s History Month. The powerful ballad, along with a powerful message, speaks on sexual assault, addressing the many issues of that victims face: mental illness, trauma, and perhaps, most importantly, ignorance and disbelief from the people around them. The “Me, too” and “I Believe You” lines are a direct reference to the #MeToo movement that gives a voice to the victims. Throughout early and mid 2018, FLETCHER performed this song at many events that focus on supporting victims of Sexual Assault. FLETCHER also released “I Believe You” apparel where 50% of the proceeds went to the It’s On Us company – who helps put an end to sexual assault on [college] campuses. In an open letter posted on Billboard.com, FLETCHER said:

“…what do you even say to someone who has been sexually assaulted? For me, the right words were ‘I believe you.’ Like the day my best friend confessed, that while we were in high school, her boss attacked her during a late night shift. Like the time my classmate came into my room and informed me she had been raped in her dorm. Like the time a member on my own team had to take a meeting with the man that harassed her as an intern, and like the close collaborator of mine who shared her story of sexual assault by her very own manager.”

“This song is for all of the amazing women I work with every day who have been felt up, shut up and kicked down. And for all the women whose stories I haven’t heard, this song was made to let them know that I’m listening, we all are.”

FLETCHER annotated some of the lyrics on Genius.com

Me, too
Girl, I believe you

Me, too (Me too, oh-oh-oh)
Me, too (Oh)
Girl, I believe you (Girl, I believe you, I believe you, I believe you)

“this is one of the most powerful lyrics i’ve ever written, and one of the most difficult to sing live as I get so emotional.”
